Jet Airways Discontinues JetLite, Merges with JetKonnect

Clearing up a long standing confusion, Jet Airways has announced its decision to merge its low-cost carriers, JetLite and JetKonnect.

On Monday, India’s leading carrier, Jet Airways made it clear that from March 25, its low-cost brand JetLite would stop operating and will be consolidated with Jet Airways’ another low-cost brand, JetKonnect.

Jet Lite and Jet Connect have been popular choices of many international travellers taking cheap flights to India and further connecting to domestic destinations within the country.

Jet Lite was formed in 2007 after the acquisition of Air Sahara by Jet Airways and is a renowned name within India’s domestic market, offering flight tickets to more than 30 local travel destinations. Operating with a fleet of 19 Boeing 737s, JetLite also offered cheap flights to India’s neighbour country, Nepal.

In July 2011, Jet Airways revealed its plans to merge both of its low-cost businesses. At that time, the Jet Group’s Vice-President (Commercial Strategy and Investor Relations), K. G. Vishwanath expressed the airline’s willingness to operate only one brand in the low-fare segment that will offer domestic flights to India’s cities.

Offering insight into what may be the airline’s another long-term plan, Jet Airways announced on Monday that apart from the traditional domestic cheap flight options, JetKonnect will provide Premiere services on certain routes where passengers can enjoy services similar to those offered to Premiere guests on Jet Airways.

The airline group also said some JetKonnect flights will operate under the S2 code, whereas others will have the 9W code.

Presently, the Jet Group operates over 600 flights a day with a fleet of 120 aircraft. Jet Airways connects 24 international destinations with flights to India and provides around 50 local connections.

JetKonnect connects India’s key domestic routes like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Kolkata.

Air India Aims to buy 27 Boeing 787 Dreamliners

The flag carrier of India, Air India has planned to purchase 27 Boeing 787s. The airline is intending to go for a sale-and-leaseback agreement in order to fix the financial burden this would implicate. Read below to get the wider picture of the news.

Air India, the flag carrier of India is heading to purchase 27 Boeing 787 aircraft. The airline initially decided to obtain it in the year 2006.

Air India is a renowned carrier and perhaps the first preferred airline for booking tickets for flights to India. Behind Jet Airways, Kingfisher and IndiGo, Air India has the fourth largest contribution in India's domestic air travel market. However, from the past sometime, the airline has been in the red.

As per the conference held on Tuesday, the cash-strapped airline’s board members have decided that rather than going for outright purchase, the airline would opt for a sale-and-leaseback arrangement that would help it to handle the financial burden this deal will include.

Moreover, the airline also has plans to lease out some of its new and old planes to reduce its thumping debts of Rs 43,777 crore.

To bring down its material consumption, Air India is considering the proposals of substituting the full meals with a snack for onboard flights of less than 90 minutes and ceasing the service of hot meals completely on flights of less than one hour.

The carrier intends to lease out its surplus capacity of two Boeing 747-400 planes and some Boeing 777-200 long-range planes as soon it will get the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

World’s best fuel-efficient airliner, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is possibly a boon for budget travellers looking for cheap flight to India. However, cheap flight tickets due to higher fuel efficiency is not the only plus point of the airliner. Boeing 787 also features amazing interiors for more stress-free medium and long-haul flights to and from India.

Tussle Between Indian Airlines and Air India to Fly the Dreamliner

Since the time Air India has planned to purchase the Boeing 787 aircraft, the pilot associations of the integrated Indian Airlines and Air India have been going under a big tussle over the right to fly it.

However, Air India put forward a policy of 1:1 which states one pilot each from Indian Airlines and Air India will be assigned the flight duty on the Boeing 787 aircraft. Even though, Air India and ICPA (representing the IA pilots) have favoured this policy, IPG (representing AI pilots) have contradicted it. IPG feels that its pilots have elite right and seniority to fly the 787s. Consequently, IPG has challenged the carrier’s step in the court.

Now it is to be seen how Air India will handle the situation emerged due to conflicts between the IPG and Indian Commercial Pilots Association over the airline’s intended policy of 1:1.

Codeshare Agreement between Jet Airways and Alitalia

Italian visitors to India and Indian travelers to Italy would be interested in knowing that Jet Airways and Alitalia have entered into a code share pact. The two airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday to operate codeshare flights in the winters of 2010.

The codeshare is a common practice between airlines for better penetration in the new markets and is often used to extend the route network of the airlines. The codeshare between Jet Airways and Alitalia spells advantage for both the airlines as well as their customers booking flights to India and Italy.

Jet Airways customers will be able to fly to more Italian destinations which are served by Alitalia flights and in turn the Alitalia customers will benefit by direct flights to India from Italy. It is reported that Jet Airways will operate direct services between Milan and New Delhi with effect from Dec 5 2010 on a daily basis.

As a part of the code share policy, Jet Airways will use its code ‘9W’ on the selected services which are operated by Alitalia and Alitalia will use its IATA code ‘AZ’ on the select services of Jet Airways including the airlines’ flights between India and Italy.

Alitalia is a member of SkyTeam global airline alliance and the agreement is likely to benefit the alliance by further contributing to its growth in the Far East sector where the alliance already has a strong hold position.

The codeshare agreement between the two airlines will cover the frequent flyers program as well as the ground activities and cargo services.

Jet Airways is one of the largest carriers of India and has Mumbai as its base while Alitalia is the national airline and the largest carrier in Italy.

Jet Airways Enters into Code Share Agreement with Gulf Air

Jet Airways entered into a code share agreement with Gulf Air. Under the agreement, Jet Airways would be placing its flight code on every Gulf Air flight between Bahrain and Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Chennai, Delhi, and Mumbai in India. Similarly, Gulf Air would be placing its flight code on all the daily Jet Air flights between Mumbai and Bahrain. Romanian citizens stand to gain the most from this code share as they get a wealth of choice to fly from Bucharest to the US, Canada, India, and the Middle East. In addition, Jet’s frequent flyer partnership also receives a boost.

With both Jet Airways and Gulf Air being market leaders in their respective domains, the code share allows both players to attain revenue synergies by exploiting each other’s market dominance. “While the carriers get to leverage their individual networks, passengers would find a world of facilities such as better connectivity, crease less inter-flight transfer, checked in baggage right through to the final destination, and the most frequent and swiftest approach to the Middle East” as pointed out by the Jet Airways’ “Best Overall Agent” award winner, Southall Travel (Southalltravel.co.uk).

Jet Airways, the premiere global carrier of India, operates cheap as well full service flights to as many as 42 Indian and 22 overseas destinations spanning the Gulf, Asia, Europe, and North America, including Riyadh, Dammam, Sharjah, Jeddah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Muscat, Bahrain, Kuwait, Kuala Lampur, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Bangkok, Singapore, Colombo, Hong Kong, Brussels, Toronto, London Heathrow, Newark and JFK.

Gulf Air holds the distinction of being the largest Middle Eastern network providing crease less onward global connections while operating non stop flights. Presently, Gulf Air connects 43 cities across 28 nations stretching from Europe to Asia. The airline operates a fleet of 35 aircrafts.
