AirAsia Could Return to Indian Skies

If rumours doing the rounds in India are indeed true then budget travellers with a liking for tickets on cheap flights have a reason to rejoice!

Reports suggest Malaysia’s budget airline, AirAsia is all eager to restart its flights to India as soon as possible. The airline is, reportedly, hoping to target the potentially profitable short-haul international routes in the region. Budget travellers will distinctly remember that AirAsia decided to call off its services to India some time ago.

While no official source is willing to validate the story, sources in the aviation industry insist that the Malaysian carrier is eager for a return to India skies. It is believed that the scrapping of bilateral landing rights, which denote exchange of landing rights for carriers of respective countries, has been the major push for AirAsia! The dismantling of bilateral landing rights means it is not compulsory for Air India to operate flights to Malaysia if AirAsia operates cheap flights to India.

Sources, who sought anonymity, say bilateral landing rights “constrained” AirAsia and now with the rule being gone, AirAsia has already applied for Indian landing rights. The airline is likely to restart India operations soon, if these reports are to be taken seriously.

The carrier will ply narrow-bodied aircraft like Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 in lieu of the A330 which was used by the airline in its earlier stint in India.

Big planes with more number of seats are more difficult to fill as compared to smaller planes with comparatively lesser number of seats, says the source.

Delhi International Airport – Heading the Race of Perfection

Delhi's Indira Gandhi International has been awarded with the title of World's Most Improved Airport in 2012 by the World Airport Awards held at the Passenger Terminal EXPO in Vienna.

The news is definitely going put big smiles on the faces of travellers who have flights to India and are scheduled to land at the award-winning Delhi Airport.

Other top challengers for the World's Most Improved Airport award were Ankara Esenboga Airport (2nd place), Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (3rd), Sydney Airport in (4th) and Recife International Airport (5th).

Chairman of SKYTRAX, Edward Plaisted praised the significant improvements in infrastructure and facilities of Delhi airport and said that the airport now meets competitive international standard.

With enhanced services and facilities, a tour of Delhi airport is definitely going to be a fascinating option for both luxury flyers as well as those seeking tickets with airlines operating cheap flights to India.

Delhi airport was also conferred with the title of ‘India’s best airport’. Bangalore International Airport, Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai and Chennai International Airport made up the top five in the country.

The World Airport Awards act as an esteemed benchmark of airport excellence and honours them on the basis of their annual SKYTRAX airport passenger satisfaction survey which includes areas like check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration. The survey of the World Airport Awards is conducted at more than 388 airports worldwide.

The IGI airport is among the top choices of holiday makers looking for cheap flights deal to travel to India due to the high number of airlines it hosts from key international airports and a high frequency of flights. The airport is a key hub for Indian international carriers – Jet Airways, Air India and Kingfisher.

Brace Up To Pay More for Using Delhi’s IGI Airport

This is no world for the poor!! Well, it surely seems the case as Delhi airport is all set to charge a new tariff from all fliers.

While India is a top holiday destination, Delhi airport is the country’s biggest gateway that handles millions of international travellers who take flights to India. The airport’s governing authority Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL) has come with a new tariff to ensure that an idea of cheap flights to India remains just that – an idea!

User Development Fee (UDF) is likely to be implemented soon as DIAL has requested the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) to announce airport charge hike as soon as possible and make the hike applicable on air travel from June 15.

A DIAL official was quoted in India’s top English daily as justifying the tariff. He says the airport is suffering losses and it makes sense to announce the hike order as early as possible. A quick announcement is also needed to avoid the situation where travellers who are "booking tickets to fly to, from or via Delhi” after the applicable date will be lining up to pay the new UDF at airport counters.

Apart from levying UDF on all fliers (which so far was applicable to outbound international and domestic fliers), DIAL had earlier sought a 774% hike in airport charges payable by airlines, which is most likely to be passed onto to travellers.

The news report states that AERA sources have confirmed DIAL's appeal for hike from June 15 and the body is likely to make an announcement by this month end.

New Cheap Flight Domestic Airline for the Indian Skies

In what may seem a silver lining among dark clouds for Indian aviation sector, a new airline might just take to India skies in the near future! Captain G R Gopinath, the man who gets the credit of kick-starting the concept of low-cost travel in India, is back! After nearly five years after the former army man-turned-businessman sold his Air Deccan Vijay Mallya (Chairman, Kingfisher Airlines), the rumour mills are rife with reports of the man getting back to the skies!

Air Deccan was launched in 2003 and was sold in 2007. However, the UB Group put an end to the low cost brand Kingfisher Red (erstwhile Air Deccan) and turned it into a full-service carrier.

While the well-equipped can argue whether the new airline launch has anything to do with the sudden demise of Kingfisher Red or not, the fact remains that country’s struggling aviation industry could well might get a short in the arm! And if rumours are to be paid heed to, then it is once again going to be a low-cost business model.

No wonder, budget travellers in the country are happy! With the prospect of availability of cheap flight tickets, who wouldn’t be! Even international tourists, who book flights to India and look to complement their cheap flights to India with cheap domestic travel in the country, can afford to smile as the current aviation scene in India does not inspire much confidence as far as getting cheap airfare deals is concerned!

A no-objection certificate (NOC) has already been secured from the Indian Civil Aviation Ministry to start the new airline.

Air India will Fly its First Dreamliner in May

The long-wait of Air India for operating Boeing 787 Dreamliner has finally been put to end. The airline is going to induct the first of its 27 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in May this year. More than 30 of Air India pilots will be trained in Singapore for flying the new plane.

Dreamliner will be active from two major Indian airports Delhi and Mumbai, popular gateways for those taking fights to India. The flying schedule is based on the assumption that the aircraft will fly 4,500 hours in a year, meaning daily flight duration of 12-13 hours.

The airline is now on tenterhooks to get the delivery of at least three more Dreamliners by the end of this year.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner is perhaps going to be a game changer for the Indian aviation sector, and in particular, the airlines ordering it as it is claimed by Boeing that it consumes 20% less fuel than any other ‘similarly sized aircrafts’. Decidedly, the Dreamliner would help Air India in cutting down its operational costs and making more profits.

A viable question by travellers could be – what’s in it for them? Though not in the near future, but travellers can hope to net travel tickets on cheap flights to India, should the airlines operating 787s decide to pass on the savings to them in the long run.

Cheap flights or no cheap flights, holiday makers aboard the new dreamliner will definitely have a world class experience for the advance technology that has been used in developing the craft.

For an ultimate passenger experience, features such as dynamic LED lighting, bigger windows, spacious stowage, cleaner and healthier air, lower cabin altitude, smoother ride and calmer cabin are particularly emphasised upon by Boeing.

Sources indicate that Jet Airways, another popular Indian carrier, has ordered 10 Dreamliners. A revolution in the Indian aviation sector is surely on the cards!

Bahrain Air Still Waiting for the Green Signal from India

The wait seems to be not ending for Bahrain Air! Second national carrier of Kingdom of Bahrain, Bahrain Air is still waiting for the Indian authorities to offer them permission so that it can re-operate recently launched flights to Thiruvananthapuram Airport, Kerala.

Bahrain Air had initiated new flights to India on March 15, offering yet another connection to Indian state of Kerala. However, the airline was forced to cancel the flights as there was delay in getting the operating clearances and permits.

Bahrain Air’s Chief Executive Richard Nuttall held responsible the bureaucracy for the hold-up. He said the delay is caused as several people are “involved in signing documents.” But he anticipated that the airline would soon be able to resume the new Kerala bound services.

Nuttall explained that the airline is in constant touch with the authorities in India and is hopeful that there will be a positive response from the Indian Civil Aviation Affairs Authority very soon.

Bahrain Air is known in the regional market for offering relatively cheap flight tickets to its customers and enjoys massive reputation among budget travellers. With long delays, it seems that travellers are really loosing out on the chance to grab cheap flights to India for their travel.

However, there do seem a light at the end of the tunnel for the airline as reports indicate that the carrier would probably be able to resume its new flights to India from Thursday.

In next three to four months, the Uzbek national carrier will start operating the new route, in order to improve air connectivity between India and Uzbekistan.

The new flight will make air travel to India, particularly for travellers from the Uzbekistan or those transiting the country much more comfortable and convenient.

Indian Govt Plans Big Investment to Develop Airports in Country

With India fast galloping towards becoming one of world’s hottest holiday destinations, Indian authorities are working overtime to ensure that travel buffs who land up in the country are impressed by every facet of the country and not just luring attractions!

Government of India has come up with plans to make sure that fliers taking flights to India are left impressed by infrastructural standards of the airports in the country. It will put in as much as $30 billion in next 10 years to develop airports. Several existing airports will be opened up for refurbishment.

Indian media has covered the story adequately and the reports point towards the success of implementation of public private partnership (PPP) model in airport development to be the major factor that has pushed the government.

A top government official has been quoted by different news sources as saying that the government’s investment in the airport segment is expected to go up from $10 billion during the 10th and 11th Five-Year Plans to $30 billion over the next decade.

It surely is bright news for not only domestic patrons but also for foreign business and leisure tourists who are often heard complaining about Indian airports’ standards. It just might also prove to a boon for those who look for tickets on cheap flights to India. Who knows with more airports available for connections, travellers might just be able to net cheap deals with the airlines!

At present, there are around 127 airports in the country. Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), New Delhi recently earned a second spot, while the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), Mumbai stood at forth place among 180 world wide airports surveyed for the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards by the Airports Council International (ACI) for 2011.

Chandigarh Airport Awaits International Flights to India

Frustration of the people waiting for Chandigarh Airport to start international flights is at a peak. Even after making many repetitive announcements of international flights starting soon, they are still an unfulfilled dream for Chandigarh Airport.

Indian Ministry of Defence has not granted the permission to the Chandigarh Airport to operate international flights even when the airport has been awarded with the status of 'customs airport' and upgraded its infrastructure.

Chandigarh Airport invested around INR 80 crores (INR 800 million) to modernize its new terminal building which opened on April 14 last year and introduced many other facilities to decoy international airlines to begin their operations from here.

Apart from this, the airport also showed its worth by operating more than 300 flights in 72 hours efficiently, counting international flights to India for those holiday makers who visited the country for the India-Pakistan Cricket World Cup semi-final match at Mohali last year. Yet, it has not been given the clearance to host international flights to India.

The low-cost international airline Air Arabia showed interest to begin Sharjah-Chandigarh flight, but as the runway and the air traffic control of the Chandigarh airport are managed by the Indian Air Force, the international airlines are obliged to take consent from the ministry of defence. Certainly, a great loss for budget travellers seeking tickets on cheap flights to India!

The Director of Chandigarh airport Captain H S Toor says that even through Chandigarh airport satisfies all the conditions required for international operations, ministry of defence has still not passed its appeal to operate international flights for six months.
